What to Expect During Bronchoscopy
Bronchoscopy is usually performed under local anesthesia with sedation or, in selected cases, under general anesthesia.
During the procedure, a thin flexible bronchoscope is passed through the nose or mouth into the airways. Your doctor may inspect the lungs, collect samples, remove mucus plugs or foreign bodies, or perform advanced therapeutic procedures if needed.
Most procedures are completed within 20–45 minutes. Mild sore throat or cough may occur afterward and usually settles within a day. Patients can typically return home the same day unless hospital observation is required.
